North Pole Animals

  In this movie, five animal furs were created: fox, husky, reindeer, hare and ferret. Yeti, Maya and Arnold was used for the process, and each animal took around 1-2 weeks for production. Each animal has its own fur characteristics and properties. An additional layer of fur was used in some animals to create a soft and fluffy look. The snow flakes were procedurally instancied at the tip of the some random strands of fur in specific areas, controlled by an attribute map. Size and shape variation were appilied to the flakes to break its uniformness.

Penguim

  All feathers were created using Yeti's feather system and rendered using Arnold. The penguin has three layers of very small feathers, one for the external line of the wings, one for the wing covert and one for the back feathers. It has also a layer of fur that covers the main body and overlap other feather layers. Two shaders were used, one for the feathers and other for the fur. The feather were mapped in both horizontal and vertical aspect, creating the brighter tip that blend with the rest of the feather. Different color patterns were divided using yeti custom render variables, like the wings, back and tail. Jitter Color nodes were used to create fine variation between each feather and each strand of fur. Specular value was also mapped differently for each part of the body using yeti variables.

Snow Simulation

  The snow simulation was created using Houdini's PBD (Position Based Dynamics), also known as "grain solver". All shots have simulation interacting with all characters and other elements, such as trees. Several improvements were made to optimize the simulation speed, such as restraining the area of action, putting particles to sleep when not moving and SOP adjustments to prepare the ground and characters.
